From the 1930's until 1991 Mongolia was basically controlled by the Soviets. Although it was never integrated as part of the Soviet Union, the Russians controlled most aspects of Mongolian life, including, as you can see from this picture, architecture. Most of the buildings in Ulaanbaatar today still look like relics from the old days of the USSR.
