One of the funny things about
Hunan, especially in the countryside, is that the people there have probably
the strangest Chinese accents I have ever heard. Like Fuzhou, the people
in Hunan have a local dialect which is their first language, but unlike
Fuzhou, I noticed people in Hunan would sometimes inadvertently mix words
from their dialect in with their Mandarin, making it even less comprehensible
to outsiders. Additionally, Hunanese men like to chew on a dried, minty,
fruit called beetlenut as they smoke their cigarettes. So imagine a foreigner
coming to America trying to communicate with a rural bumpkin from Mississippi
as he chomped on a mouthfull of Big League Chew and sucked on a cigar.
