Spring Festival is kind of like a cross between Christmas and the Fourth of July. Families get together on New Years Eve (the Chinese one of course) and eat a nice dinner, then as midnight approaches, mayhem ensues, as people blow up roll after roll of firecrackers in the stairwells of their balconies, as you can see from this "day after" picture.
