Sanming isn't too big, probably slightly larger than Fuqing where I used to live, and much smaller than Fuzhou where I work now. The streetscape is pretty typical of a smaller Chinese city. There are taxis, but no skyscrapers, a McDonald's, but no Pizza Hut, and shopping malls, but no Pradda.
