We decided to play along. We were Muslims from America going abroad to connect with our brothers in China. I had a very thick beard at the time so people had already been assuming I was coming from Pakistan. Interestingly enough, it was easier to convince people that I was a Muslim from Pakistan than it was to convince them I was a Jew from the US. Go figure.
