As you can see from the photos, Urumuqi is your typical big Chinese capital city, in terms of modernity (is that even a word?). However, it is actually quite clean, and because Xinjiang does not have the population pressure that that there is in Eastern China, the city area is pleasantly spread out, rather than the "sardines crammed in a tight package" feeling you get from most large Eastern cities.
