For the first leg of our journey we decided to travel to Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous region, which is the enormous expanse of land to the north of Tibet. It is the largest province (technically it's an 'autonomous region' not a province) in China, taking up 1/6 of the total land area, but has one of the smallest populations. Our first stop was Urumqi, the capital, and largest city.
