Pingyao is an ancient city in Shanxi province.  It was along the old road between Beijing and Xi'an, and was the spot of China's first banks.  During the Ming and Qing Dynasties (the last two) Pingyao became the financial center of China, but as the banks moved away, the city fell into poverty.
