At the site where the old synagogue
(now the boiler room for a factory) was located I met a Chinese guy who,
when I told him I was interested in the Jews of Kaifeng, pointed me toward
a hutong (Chinese alleyway neighborhood) where the old Jewish population
lived. I asked around and from what I gathered, there wasn't much left
of the Jews of Kaifeng. I was ,however, directed to a residence which
was supposedly home to a Jewish family. When I knocked on the door, there
was no answer, but as I was turning away I looked up and saw this mezuzzah
on the door. As contrived as it may sound, it was quite the thrill to
see the definitive sign of Jewish marking of territory in a hutong in
China.
