Kaifeng is located in Henan province (still in Northern China), and at one time (like countless other cities) was the capital of China. Today the city is relatively poor and unmodernized compared with other larger cities in China. Kaifeng was also the home of the one of the oldest Chinese Jewish communities in China. Unlike the Jews from Shanghai, the ones in Kaifeng were actually Chinese and not European refugees.
