Beijing is famous for its "hutongs" or alleyways.  Most of the city was originally layed out with hutongs running perpendicular to the main streets.  Although the buildings have been rebuilt and destroyed many times over the years, most hutongs have maintained the original layout, and are still home to many of Beijing's residents.
