This is the Holy Ark.  Yup, that's right.  It took me a while to locate it as well.  I was thinking "I am in a synagogue, so there should be an ark somewhere."  On first thought, I did not consider that it could be hiding behind a giant red "No Child's Play" sign, but in China I guess that's just how they do things.
